Exhibition Statement
This exhibition, Home | House | Houses | Home, ventures beyond the simplistic definitions of shelter to reveal the intricate, resilient social architecture of the slum community. It is an invitation to look past perceptions of density and poverty and to encounter the profound human networks that thrive within.
Here, homes are not isolated. They lean into one another, connected by translucent walls through which lives are overheard and stories spill across thresholds. Neighbors converse over shared courtyards, voices carry along narrow alleys, and the pulse of daily life travels as naturally as breath. What emerges is not a cluster of houses but a living organism—a community that exists as many and as one.
The artworks presented do not merely depict structures of corrugated metal and reclaimed wood; they map pathways that become arteries of connection. They highlight courtyards that transform into collective living rooms, alleys that double as playgrounds and marketplaces, and the single water tap that anchors daily ritual, gossip, and camaraderie.
Each piece in this collection explores a different facet of this ecosystem:
- The Home – a private sanctuary, meticulously crafted and filled with personal meaning against all odds.
- The House – a physical entity, a testament to ingenuity and adaptation.
- The Houses – in their multitude, showing how proximity fosters interdependence, a safety net of shared resources and collective responsibility.
- And finally, the return to Home – no longer confined to four walls, but expanded into the neighborhood-wide embrace of belonging.
This exhibition challenges us to reconsider our definitions of wealth, privacy, and community. It asks us to see strength in solidarity, beauty in resourcefulness, and dignity in the closeness of lives interwoven. Here, houses built side by side transcend mere shelter—they become a testament to humanity’s most enduring need: to connect, to support, and to belong.
